Doug McElvy's Red Clay Revival
ASHEVILLE, NC — Douglas McElvy Junior and his band Red Clay Revival release “Devil’s Gonna Get Ya.” The single will be on streaming platforms October 31, 2025 and is currently available for airplay, just in time for Halloween and beyond.
Poignant and intense, the accompanying music video shows a man (played by McElvy) indulging in his own destruction (think a big mess, breaking glass, drinking, drugs, suicidal thoughts, and a gun). This content is not suitable for sensitive viewers and includes a trigger warning due to its potentially emotionally challenging themes.
The song lyrics, “65 out of Montgomery, headed to the ham, get a little funny. Big white sign, red letters said. Go to church or the devil’s gonna get you” are inspired by a sign on Interstate Highway 65 near Montgomery, Alabama, and by what he calls “the fire and brimstone type of revivals” that are so common in the southeast.
McElvy says, “I and so many others from that area grew up seeing that sign, and it holds a space in many people’s minds. The video hits close to home for a lot of people from the area and for others that have just passed through.”
McElvy wrote “Devil’s Gonna Get Ya” and has performed it with his band Red Clay Revival for years since the early 2000s. Along with the song’s vocals, McElvy plays synth and rhythm guitar. Co-produced by McElvy and bandmate/drummer Jacob Baumann and longtime collaborator Josh Phillips. Other track credits include Daniel Iannucci on bass guitar, Drew Matulich on electric guitar, Billy Cardine on steel guitar, Simon George on piano and organ, and Shaun Nicklin on banjo. The track was engineered and mixed by Julian Dreyer and mastered by Dave Harris at Studio B Mastering. The video, a concept thought up by McElvy, was filmed and edited by Samuel Treadwell in Montgomery, Alabama.
More about Doug McElvy Junior and Red Clay Revival:
McElvy started his band, Red Clay Revival, in the soul-basted countryside of Alabama, then brought it to the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains to marinate and mature. Red Clay Revival delivers an experience that continues to reshape the parameters of roots music with skillful, heart-driven compositions. Bandleader and songsmith extraordinaire, Mcelvy, lays a solid foundation at the epicenter of Red Clay’s musical magnitude. The band’s high-energy shows are filled with slam-grass/bluegrass breaks and a rock feel; it’s an entertaining performance sure to get the crowd moving regardless of musical taste.
“I love this band! These musicians carve an irresistible groove that always gets the party started. Doug McElvy is an authentic, soulful powerhouse of a vocalist and songwriter. Doug and his Red Clay Revival render a rootsy blend of folk rock foundation and inventive yet catchy lyrics. It’s earthy and fun music with dark overtones too,” say flatpicking legend Larry Keel and bassist Jenny Keel.
Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Doug McElvy Junior began to learn the violin and piano at the age of six. He has always loved to write music, sing, and entertain. He grew up playing in church and at his high school and then began playing keyboards and with fun bands all around the southeast. He has shared the stage with Colonel Bruce Hampton, Donna Hopkins, Vince Herman, and many many more. He has always written music on guitar and piano but tended to be the band’s keyboard player. That was until 2009 when he was given the opportunity to open for Tony Rice and Larry Keel at the Bama Theatre in his home town of Tuscaloosa.
He said, “The inspiration from being able to play with Tony and Larry sparked me into writing and performing more original music and eventually starting the band Red Clay Revival.” In 2012, Red Clay Revival released a full length record, produced by Billy Cardine, called Barefoot, in which he collaborated with Keller Williams, Larry Keel, and Tim Carbone. In 2014 he released an EP, Chilly, once again pairing with Cardine in production, and recruiting the talents of world class violinist Casey Driessen and beat master Jeff Sipe for backing elements. Since then he’s released a few singles, “Gold” (2021) and “She’s Hot” in 2023.
